Our Story

CAN is a group of professionals from a variety of backgrounds that come together twice a month to bring referrals, business and laughter to one another.

Just last year, our group decided to rebrand from another networking organization. Capital Area Networking group officially took off in January of 2023 with the mission of fun and referrals!

Our Fearless Leaders

Jim O'Brien - President

Jim is head of NY Insurance Hub, an insurance agency that works in all facets from management to quoting to servicing clients.

NY Insurance Hub is a member agency of the Satellite Agency Network (SAN) Group, the leading independent agency alliance in the Northeast. The insurance agency joined SAN Group in 2018, enabling it to offer more products from multiple top carriers and better serve the interests of its clients, while remaining a locally owned independent agency.

The agency slogan is “Expect More” because they strive to offer more services, options, and personal guidance throughout the process and act as a ‘hub’ for service, information, price and coverage. The agency offers full lines of personal insurance such as home, auto, renter’s, mobile home and motorcycle coverage, and full commercial insurance including business owner’s policies, auto, property, and contractor insurance. Old school service and attention coupled with modern streamlined quoting capabilities to zero-in on the best value for their clients.

In his free time, Jim loves to play guitar and write music, lift weights, boxing, along with travel when time permits. 

Paul DeDominicis - Roster & Facilities Coordinator

Paul DeDominicis is the general manager of Clark Moving & Storage of Albany, your Mayflower Transit Agent in the “518” and beyond.

The company began in Rochester in 1985 by Richard and Cathy Clark and expanded to Albany in 1991, after the Clark’s saw the opportunity in the Capital Region.

During that time the operation grew from a satellite sales office, to a 30,000 square
foot facility in Colonie, just outside of Albany. 

Services include both local and long distance residential and commercial moving which includes packing, transit and storage. As a Mayflower Transit agent, they service a multitude of corporate accounts, relocating employees and their families in the continental United States and internationally.

Paul joined Clark Moving & Storage in 1996. he has since helped double the warehouse capacity.
 
Paul is also an active volunteer firefighter and president of his local fire company in Menands, an avid swimmer, a proud father and grandfather and the biggest supporter of his wife of 34 years who is a dedicated runner, traveling the northeast to participate in various half marathons and other distance races. He has a BS in Business Management from SUNY Plattsburgh and an MBA from Russell Sage College.

Dawn McCurdy - Management Advisor

Dawn has been an active member of the real estate community since 1985. As the Broker and Owner of McCurdy Real Estate Group, Inc., located in Latham, New York, she takes great pride in providing exceptional service to individuals and families in various real estate situations.

McCurdy Real Estate Group has built a strong reputation as one of the premier real estate agencies in New York’s Capital Region since their establishment in 2004. Dawn personally works with clients who are upgrading, downsizing, buying their first home, purchasing second homes, investing in real estate, or relocating. She understands that each client has unique needs and goals, and her focus is on providing them with all the necessary resources and information they need for a seamless experience.

To ensure the highest quality service, she has established a network of trusted vendor partners who share her commitment to excellence. This allows her to deliver the best possible guidance to her clients and meet their expectations.

When she is not working, she enjoys pursuing her personal interests such as reading, attending seminars to expand her knowledge, and taking long walks with her dog, Rosie. She cherishes the time she spends with her twin daughters, who are in college, as well as her loving engineer husband of 27 years, Phil.

Dan Maloy - Treasurer

Daniel P. Maloy was born and raised in the Capital Area of upstate New York. 

He joined The DeLorenzo Law Firm as an Associate Attorney in January of 2011. In 2017, with the merger of The DeLorenzo Law Firm and Grasso, Rodriduez, Grasso & Burke, Dan was named a partner in the new firm, DeLorenzo, Grasso & Dalmata.

Dan handles cases involving a wide range of practice areas. He has experience practicing in Wills, Trusts and Estates, Personal Injury, Contracts, Criminal Defense and Insurance claims. His experience in many different areas of law allows him to serve his clients better.

He currently resides in Schenectady, New York with his wife.

Amelia Waters - Website and Social Media Manager & Advisor

Amelia Waters runs Dual Strength Strategies from Bethlehem, New York. She brings almost 20 years of social media and web development expertise to the group. She has worked in a variety of industries but always found her niche as a creative techie helping businesses and brands find their space online.

She founded her business during the pandemic and continues to rapidly grow and expand her network across the country. 

She designed CAN’s website and does all their social media. 

Amelia also balances a career in fitness as a personal trainer. Hence the name Dual Strength Strategies.

Amelia comes to us from the Boston area but has made the Capital Area her home since 2010. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her two cats, hiking, exploring New York City with her boyfriend and spending time with family.

Steve Hartmann - Events Calendar Coordinator, Management Advisor

Stephen Hartmann, President of Hartmann Financial Group, LLC, in Delmar, has been in the securities industry since 1995. Before going independent in 2005, he worked for an Albany based regional bank (Hudson River Bank & Trust) where he was president and director of the 53 branch investment management division (Hudson River Financial Mgmt.) and a bank vice president. In 2005, he started his own Office of
Supervisory Jurisdiction (OSJ) with broker dealer partner Excel Securities & Assoc. Today, Hartmann Financial Group has two full time, one part time employee and two 1099 contractors. The primary scope of Hartmann Financial Group’s business offerings is in the qualified plans (401, 403b, SEP, SIMPLE) arena. Through strategic partnerships with several national companies like Paychex, ADP, Fidelity and. Chase, to name a few. 

Hartmann Financial is able to accommodate all plan types and designs from open architecture to fund specific. Additionally, they have strategic relationships with many TPA’s and recordkeepers to offer turn-key solutions to their clients.

Other services include, brokerage accounts, IRA, 529 plans, trusts, endowments, fiduciary/operating accounts, and insurance services (life, LTC, disability, Medicare supplemental.)

Stephen Hartmann holds the following licenses and certifications including, Series 24 (General Securities Principal), Series 66 (Registered Investment Advisor), and Series 6, 65, 7 (Registered Representative.)

Steve resides in Voorheesville, New York with his wife and four kids. 

Lori Costello-Martin - Referral Coordinator

Lori is an account executive for Combined Insurance  and specializes in Supplement Insurance Coverage. She helps individuals with Whole Life Insurance, Cancer Care, Sickness, Accidental, Critical Care, Disability etc.  She have over 9 years of experience in the Capital Region and is currently working with businesses for employee group coverage. She is dedicated and fully committed from start to finish. 

The Rest of CAN Nation

Jeff is a welder turned office furniture dealer for his family business in Slingerlands, New York. The business originally began in 1910 and was known as Green’s Office Outfitters and was run by Joseph Green. In 1984, Jeff’s grandfather, Bill Nathan, purchased the furniture assets from his grandfather’s business and founded Nathan Office Interiors.
 
Nathan Office Interiors works with businesses, education and healthcare industries throughout the Capital Region to enhance workspace experiences through office furniture and environments.
 
Today, Nathan Office Interiors is run by Jeff and his older sister Samantha, who visits CAN Nation as well.

A native of Ballston Lake, Bob graduated with a degree in business economics from the State University of New York at Oneonta. He has an unwavering commitment to ensure that his client’s dreams of home ownership become a reality. He follows the application from start to finish, ensuring that the client’s experience is as flawless as possible, dedicating himself to helping customers achieve their home-buying goals. He works hard to provide the best possible service and make the mortgage process comfortable and easy to understand.  His numerous referrals are a tribute to his outstanding performance for past clients. 

Stacey Carbonare

Stacey is the bank manager of BSNB, formerly known as Ballston Spa National Bank, in Latham, NY. She is a pro at anything banking and helps any clients of any size!
